Exploring the benefits of CBD for Chemotherapy Patients

What is chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy is an anti-cancer drug that kills cancer cells by disrupting their growth and division. Chemotherapy drugs target rapidly growing cells, and cancer cells grow much more quickly than most cells in the body, so are more likely targets. Unfortunately, some healthy cells are affected, but they can usually recover from damage, whereas cancer cells cannot recover and eventually die. Chemotherapy prevents cancer cells from reproducing by killing cells in the process of cell division, where one cell splits to produce two cells. This prevents cancer cells from growing and spreading in the body.

What does the research say about CBD & Cancer?

In terms of CBD and cancer, there are two main areas of research. Some scientists are studying whether CBD can relieve some of the side effects of cancer and chemotherapy, and some scientists are investigating whether CBD can slow or prevent the growth of cancerous cells. Whilst there have not been any large-scale human studies showing that CBD slows the growth of cancer cells, some studies show that CBD can ease the side effects of chemotherapy.

The main focus of CBD for cancer treatment is its ability to reduce nausea and vomiting that often accompanies chemotherapy and radiation treatment. As well as it’s therapeutic properties in reducing anxiety and stress.

How can CBD help?

Dr. Rahul Khare, MD, CEO and founder of Innovative Care, a group of medical practices in Chicago, says “CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help reduce pain and anxiety. Cannabis products can also help reduce nausea and vomiting and support digestive health. I’ve also recommended cannabis to patients who are struggling to maintain proper nutrition or experiencing a significant amount of weight loss during cancer treatment. Certain cannabis strains will spark an appetite and help in those circumstances.”

CBD and Chemotherapy-Related Discomfort

Both cancer and chemotherapy can lead to discomfort, which may arise from inflammation, pressure on internal organs, or nerve-related issues. In some cases, severe pain is managed with prescription medications such as opioids, though these can have side effects, including cognitive impairment, gastrointestinal issues, mood changes, and potential dependency risks. Neuropathic discomfort is a common side effect of chemotherapy, with treatment affecting nerve cells in a significant number of patients. Standard approaches often involve medications like anti-epileptics or antidepressants, though these may not work for everyone and can have their own side effects.

CBD has been explored for its potential role in supporting general well-being, including in areas related to discomfort and inflammation. Some research suggests that CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, including CB2 receptors, though the full implications of this interaction remain under study.

A 2014 study indicated that individuals using CBD alongside their treatment reported adjustments in their pain management strategies, improved sleep quality, and lower discomfort levels. Additionally, some studies have explored CBD’s potential effects on mood and relaxation, which could be relevant to those undergoing chemotherapy. However, more research is needed to fully understand CBD’s role in this context.

FDA-Approved Cannabis-Based Medications

In the US, two cannabis-based medications—dronabinol and nabilone—are FDA-approved for chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting in cases where conventional treatments have not been effective. These medications contain synthetic THC rather than CBD. While dronabinol is not licensed in the UK, nabilone can be prescribed under specific circumstances. Research analyzing multiple clinical trials suggests that cannabinoids may have potential in addressing nausea and vomiting, though responses can vary between individuals.

Another medication, nabiximols, which contains both THC and CBD, is licensed in Canada and some parts of Europe. Some studies have explored its potential for cancer-related discomfort when standard treatments are insufficient. However, research on these medications is ongoing, and further studies are needed to understand how cannabis-derived compounds interact with chemotherapy.

Summary

Chemotherapy can lead to a range of side effects, and researchers continue to explore various approaches to managing them. Some studies suggest that CBD may have potential in areas such as discomfort, nausea, sleep, and general well-being. However, more research is needed to assess its safety and effectiveness alongside chemotherapy treatments. Notably, current licensed cannabis-based medications for chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting contain THC rather than CBD, and further studies are required to isolate CBD’s potential effects.
